As your permit draws close to expiry, you may continue your operation in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Great Barrier Reef Coast Marine Park by making a new permit application.

When should I apply?

If you wish to continue operating in the Marine Parks beyond your existing permit's expiry date, you must lodge your application with the GBRMPA or the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) so that it is received prior to the expiry date.

You can continue to operate beyond the current expiry date and in accordance with your existing permit if your application for a new permit is pending and it was lodged prior to the current expiry date. Once a decision is made on your application to continue operations, you must abide by your new permit.

How do I apply?

To apply to continue your operation, you must complete a Marine Parks Permit Application Form (see Download form). Check that you are up-to-date with the current arrangements for making a new application.

How much will it cost?

You will need to pay a Permit Application Assessment Fee. Because the assessment process is usually simpler, the 'continuation' fee is usually less than the amount charged for the initial application assessment.

How is it assessed?

As with any new application, a complete permit assessment process is followed when considering your application.

If your permit is a 'special tourism permission', we will also check whether you have made reasonable use of the permit.

Will I receive a reminder?

In most cases, we will send you a reminder letter when your current permit is about to expire. However, it is up to you to make sure you lodge an application in time to continue your permit.

Not receiving a reminder notice is not accepted as a reason for conducting an unpermitted operation. You will have to cease operations immediately if you do not apply before your current permit expires.
