Standard Mooring Buoys

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority encourages all mooring permittees to use standardised mooring buoyage on all their permitted moorings. This will greatly assist in the use and management of these moorings.

The standards for the buoys of privately owned moorings are:

  • white
  • not less than 250 mm or greater than 800 mm in greatest dimension
  • UV stabilised and of a robust construction
  • designed specifically for use as a buoy in the marine environment
  • either generally spherical, 'teardrop' shaped, or the shape of two cones joined at their bases.

Pre-fabricated buoyage meeting these requirements is available for purchase. Contact the GBRMPA for information.

What are GBRMPA mooring reference numbers

The GBRMPA issues a unique mooring reference number with your permit. Contact the GBRMPA if you can not locate this number. You must display your GBRMPA mooring reference number on your mooring buoy. If your mooring also has a buoy mooring authority from Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) the display of the MSQ number will be accepted. The number should be:

  • displayed in a permanent manner on your mooring buoy
  • maintained so as to be legible at all times.
